Clonal evaluation and recurrent flowering of ornamental pineapple hybrid for use as miniature potted plant Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Silva,Bruna de Fátima Batista da; Souza,Everton Hilo de; Dias,Lucas Ezequiel da Costa; Silva,Ronilze Leite da; Souza,Fernanda Vidigal Duarte.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the cloning and recurrent flowering of the miniature pineapple hybrid ORN-MUT based on quantitative and qualitative morphological descriptors for possible use as a potted plant. Besides its reduced size, the ORN-MUT hybrid is notable for its pink fruit, absence of thorns and recurrent flowering at the crown, formed after the plant's complete cycle (562 days). The hybrid was assessed in the experimental field of the Embrapa Cassava and Fruits research unit in two flowering stages (first flowering and recurrent flowering) and was characterized by quantitative and qualitative morphological descriptors. A joint analysis of the data (multivariate analysis) was performed to verify the distinguishability and...

Floral and reproductive biology of Alcantarea nahoumii (Bromeliaceae), a vulnerable endemic species of the Atlantic Forest Acta Botanica
Bastos,Maria Josirene Souza Moreira; Bastos,Lucimário Pereira; Souza,Everton Hilo de; Soares,Taliane Leila; Morais,Daniel Vieira; Souza,Fernanda Vidigal Duarte de; Costa,Maria Angélica Pereira de Carvalho.
ABSTRACT Alcantarea nahoumii occurs exclusively in the state of Bahia, Brazil, and is classified as vulnerable due to deforestation and frequent fires in the region. Knowledge of floral and reproductive biology is fundamental to understanding ecological interactions, as well as the reproductive success of plant species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the floral and reproductive biology of A. nahoumii in an Atlantic Forest fragment with regard to phenology, pollen viability, stigma receptivity, pollination ecology and reproductive systems, all of which are important parameters for of the development of conservation strategies for the species. Anthesis is diurnal and heterogeneous, starting at 6:30 a.m. and lasting until 8:00 a.m. Highest...

In vivo fertilization of banana Ciência Rural
Soares,Taliane Leila; Souza,Everton Hilo de; Costa,Maria Angélica Pereira de Carvalho; Silva,Sebastião de Oliveira e; Serejo,Janay Almeida dos Santos.
The aim of this research was to study the in vivo fertilization process of banana cultivars. The diploid hybrid (AA) 091087-01 was the male progenitor. Flower samples were checked for fertilization from the first to the twentieth day after pollination. The size of the diploid ovules increased gradually at the beginning of the seed formation process. On the other hand, in the AAA triploids (Cavendish subgroup), the not fertilized ovules were aborted. In the AAB triploids (Prata subgroup) some ovules were fertilized. The flowers of Grand Naine, Nanicão and 'Pacovan' cultivars presented necrosis in the distal part of the ovary on the first day after pollination. Necrosis can hinder pollen tube growth towards the ovule, which might be related to the low seed...

Morphology and viability of pollen grains from passion fruit species (Passiflora spp.) Acta Botanica
Soares,Taliane Leila; Jesus,Onildo Nunes de; Souza,Everton Hilo de; Santos-Serejo,Janay Almeida dos; Oliveira,Eder Jorge de.
The characterization and viability of pollen grains are useful tools to guide crosses in breeding programs. The objective of this study was to describe the morphological patterns and viability of pollen grains from five accessions of Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa O. Deg. and five accessions of Passiflora setacea DC. Pollen morphology descriptions were made using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, whereas the viability analysis was performed by in vitro germination and histochemical analysis (Lugol's solution and 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride). Pollen grains assessed for germination were inoculated in culture medium containing Ca(NO3).4H2O (0.03%), Mg(SO4).7H2O (0.02%), KNO3 (0.01%), H3BO3 (0.01%), sucrose (15%) and agar (0.8%)....

Selection and use recommendation in hybrids of ornamental pineapple Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Souza,Everton Hilo de; Costa,Maria Angélica Pereira de Carvalho; Santos-Serejo,Janay Almeida; Souza,Fernanda Vidigal Duarte.
The use of pineapples as ornamental plants has increased in the last years due to their beauty and originality, demanding the generation of new varieties. The objective of the present work was to study the genetic variability and type of use of hybrids as ornamental pineapples, besides evaluating the resistance of these hybrids to Fusarium wilt. Six progenies, FRF-22 X FRF-1387, FRF-1392 X FRF-32, Curauá Roxo X Ananás Tricolor, G-44 X FRF-1387, FRF-1392 X FRF-224 and FRF-1387 X FRF-224, were evaluated by eleven morphological descriptors, and five categories of use were taken into account: landscaping plants, cut flower, potted plants, minifruits and foliage. High variability within and between progenies was detected, which allowed the selection of 16...

Viability of pollen grains of tetraploid banana Bragantia
Soares,Taliane Leila; Souza,Everton Hilo de; Costa,Maria Angélica Pereira de Carvalho; Silva,Sebastião de Oliveira e; Santos-Serejo,Janay Almeida dos.
ABSTRACT Obtaining banana tetraploid cultivars from triploid strains results in total or partial reestablishment of fertility, allowing the occurrence of some fruits with seeds, a feature that is undesirable from a marketing perspective. The objective of this study was to assess the viability of pollen of 12 banana tetraploid hybrids (AAAB) by means of in vitro germination and two histochemical tests (acetocarmine and 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride). The pollen tube growth was evaluated by germinating grains in three culture media — M1: 0.03% Ca(NO3)∙4H2O, 0.02% Mg(SO4)∙7H2O, 0.01% KNO3, 0.01% H3BO3 and 15% sucrose; M2: 0.03% Ca(NO3)∙4H2O, 0.01% KNO3, 0.01% H3BO3 and 10% sucrose; and M3: 0.015% H3BO3, 0.045% Ca3(PO4)2 and 25% sucrose. The acetocarmine...
